There are a variety of different formats for both groups and people and the main rule is no motor powered sports are included. A race comprises of a number of steps and each stage is a different sport, so you may start the race in a canoe and then change at a transition point to running and maybe end with inline skating.

Journey racing is analogous to triathlon or Iron man competitions, but typically harder and longer. Beginners customarily commence with run races which last a couple of hours and may include sports like running, canoeing, trail biking, inline skating, swimming. In a team race all of the team generally take part at the same time and must stay together, unfinished groups at the finish are disqualified. Groups are given a number of check points which they need to pass thru so you should have some navigation abilities.

Some races happen over a weekend, that means racing in the dark and these might include further jobs such as orienteering, abseiling. Climbing. The final journey races are expedition type races lasting 5-10 days or more for groups of four folk one of whom needs to be female, infrequently with support crew to move apparatus from place to place and occasionally unsupported. The multiple legs will generally include further sports like pony riding, whitewater rafting caving, sailing and other sports. The races are typically non-stop in that teams will decide themselves when to rest.
